It is home to some of the most important historical buildings in the country, including the magnificent Stowe House, a Grade I listed country house built in the early 18th century; Waddesdon Manor, a French Renaissance-style château built in the late 19th century; and Claydon House, a Grade I listed country house built in the mid-18th century. Buckinghamshire is also home to the beautiful Hughenden Manor, a Grade I listed country house built in the mid-19th century, and the grand Bletchley Park, a Victorian mansion and the site of the World War II code-breaking operations. Gastronomically, Buckinghamshire is renowned for its traditional English dishes such as the Buckinghamshire ploughman's lunch, a hearty meal of bread, cheese, and pickles, and the Buckinghamshire beef and ale pie, a savory pastry filled with beef and ale. The county is also known for its delicious local cheeses, such as the award-winning Berkswell cheese, and its traditional desserts, such as the Buckinghamshire clotted cream tart. Buckinghamshire has a long and fascinating history, stretching back to the Iron Age. It was the site of the Battle of Aylesbury in 1642, during the English Civil War, and was the birthplace of the famous poet John Milton. The county was also home to the famous author Roald Dahl, who wrote many of his beloved children's books in the area.
